Overview

The Great Egret (Ardea alba) is a large white wading bird known for its elegant appearance, long neck, yellow bill, and graceful hunting behavior in wetlands, marshes, and coastal areas. During the breeding season, it develops delicate ornamental plumes that once made the species a target of the plume trade. Great Egrets feed primarily on fish, amphibians, and small aquatic animals, stalking prey slowly through shallow water before striking with remarkable speed.
